Week 3 Jan 28-Feb 03 Networking

Find the blog post about this at https://learning2gether.net/2018/01/28/learning2gether-with-evo-minecraft-mooc-temples-at-the-seaside/

This video was made Jan 28, 2018 and features Dakota Redstone, Abu Fletcher (Don Carroll), Jane Chien, Mattie Tsai, Maha Abdulmoneim, and Mircea Patrascu. We were a week into trying to crack into an underwater temple that Abu Fletcher found on a cross-ocean adventure in Minecraft.

At this point the team have built a pier out to the temple site and have made great progress in placing glass around the temple and somehow purging it of water. They are now trying to extend their tunnel toward where they feel is the entrance and shore up the massive water leaks with sand. The recording has sound issues because where I am in UAE the computer that does Discord lags awfully when running Minecraft, and the one that runs MC will not do Discord, so I’m having to pick up the Discord sound using a USB mic into which I’m speaking while picking up the discord off the other computer played at high volume into the USB mic. Not the best arrangement, but it works.

Even worse is happening at the temple. The sea environment is patrolled by sea creatures. One kind is a jellyfish that swoops over players and induces a kind of comma that prevents effective use of tools. The only anecdote is to drink milk to counteract the venom. MC is about solving problems, so to break objects at the temple, players have to sustain a milk supply. There are cows back on land. Dakota penned a few up. If you right click on them they will give you milk if you have a bucket. You can craft buckets from iron. Dakota set up chests at the foot of the pier and put buckets inside which players could take to the cows, right click on them and get milk. As the work moved out to the temple itself, Mattie brought a cow out in a boat where Dakota had set up chests at the end of the pier where glass was being erected around the temple and sand used to drive out water. In this video the players are working to remove the sand and then plug the leak letting water back in. They are constantly getting poisoned by sea creatures and having to drink milk to continue the work.

Even worse is a creature called a guardian which can reach its tentacles from the sea onto the pier and even reach places on land. The tentacles are lethal. Fortunately in our game configuration, we don’t lose inventory when we die and we can return to our place of death by using the /back command. So these creatures cause setback and inconvenience, and hinder the work, which is conducted as a cooperative effort guided mainly by our kindly colleague who calls himself Dakota Redstone.

When we engage in directed project like this, it is an illustration of how this might work in a language class, where players / students resolve on a mission (in this case getting at the loot in a sunken temple) and then communicate with each other on how they might engineer a solution, and then carry it out with some difficulty and coordination involving constant communication and interaction. It’s goal-directed and task-based. It’s fun and compelling, and intrinsically motivates people to work together.

Through playing meaningfully in this way, we learn first-hand how this can be a ripe environment for language learning.

On Feb 4, 2018 Alexander Hayes met with participants in the Electronic Village Online EVO Minecraft MOOC, combined with Learning2gether episode 382.

Alexander Hayes presented his views on Minecraft: My Experience and Your Dilemma

The event was streamed as a YouTube Live Hangout on Air (HoA) and the live link was posted in such a way that Mircea Patrascu, Maha Abdelmoneim, Jo Kay, Jane Chien, and Don Carroll were all able to join in the live discussion in the hangout.

You can also catch the stream when it happens on Vance's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/vancestev/

Abstract

As active agents of sociological change children now challenge the researcher stereotype amidst a battleground of virtual, augmented and mixed reality wearable computing. Fractals once closer to philosophical ramblings of the mathematical in the field of chaos theory are now an educative and neurological rearrangement as STEAM gets creative in Minecraft. A dilemma has emerged as participatory netnography reveals the longer term socio-ethical effects of corporations punching through our privacy firewalls, programming our minds and harvesting our creativity.

Maha was kind enough to provide a link to the HoA text chat she managed to harvest before shutting down her browser

(Vance is not able to select text in his Chrome browser, Windows 10, in order to copy it, and FF, which does allow me to select and copy text, was refusing yesterday to run HoA until Google fixed an issue with Hangouts).

Post EVOMC2018 sessions and reflections

Thu Feb 22 EVO Minecraft MOOC - Underwater exploration on Om_Temple

https://learning2gether.net/2018/02/22/learning2gether-with-evo-minecraft-mooc-underwater-exploration-on-om_temple/

Abu Fletcher a.k.a. Don Carroll has been explorer extraordinaire in EVO Minecraft MOOC 2018. He has been finding temples in all kinds of biomes, and has pioneered underwater temple exploration. With community help from Dakota Redstone, who prepares potions for night vision and underwater breathing, we are able to go underwater and negotiate the temples for as long as we are able to avoid the lethal guardians. Don showed me (Vance) this temple before and I resolved to return and video it in OBS. I announced it on our community space and Maha Abdelmoneim and Jane Chien joined us for several rounds of potion so we could explore the temple. At the end of the video I got good shots of Maha (Olivetree_Grove) trying to explore the temple and fighting off guardians until we both ran out of air. Then it was re-spawn on shore for a debrief and drying off after the experience.

There is so much to learn about this game with scaffolding help from our active community.  If you are whitelisted on our server you can find the temple at /warp om_temple and if you are lucky you might find some potion in the diving supplies chest. If you get hit by a flying jellyfish, you can restore your strength by drinking milk (in the other chest) and then take the two potions for Night Vision and Underwater Breathing one after the other. Then jump in the water and try to avoid the monsters. DON'T drink milk after drinking potion as it will negate the effects of the potions.

Sun Feb 25 1400 UTC Closing Webcast of EVO 2018

Blogged at: https://learning2gether.net/2018/02/25/learning2gether-with-the-evo-2018-annual-closing-ceremony/

How did you enjoy your past 5 weeks of unparalleled community building and peer-based learning? You are invited to come online to discuss, reflect, and relate your stories about your experience in EVO2018 this January-February.

In a break from tradition, this year's closing ceremony is the week after the official end of the sessions. We have seen from experience that many of the sessions like to stage their own events around the time of the official end of EVO, and a closing ceremony on Feb 18 interferes with that; hence the choice of Sun, Feb 25.

As usual, the session will be held in Bb Collaborate and streamed on Vance's YouTube channel, with opportunities for you to join us live in BbC or participate in real-time in the YouTube or Chatwing text chats.

Please join us live if you wish in Bb Collaborate at the link here: http://webheads.learningtimesevents.org
