Missions for Week 1 Orient

Check here to tick off your missions accomplished for Weeks 1 and 2

Here are your missions for weeks 1 and 2

Missions for Week 1 Orient

Mission 1 - Introduce yourself on our Facebook Group or at Groups.io

Jan, 11-18, 2020

Why?

We'd like to get to know each other.

What should you be doing?

Create a post at one of these spaces to tell us who you are and what brings you to Minecraft

How you can verify this mission accomplished

We will see your introduction in one of our community spaces below

*NOTE

We tend to reject applications with profiles that suggest that the person applying is (1) not representing his or her real identity, and (2) is not connected in some way with education. When we can see enough of the profile to determine that one or both of those is not the case we accept the application; otherwise we might ignore or reject it.

The majority in our group appear comfortable with FB. Vance thinks that groups.io can help us be more inclusive IN ADDITION to FB.

Meanwhile, the EVO Minecraft MOOC team have been working behind the scenes to create Google Classroom and Google Group spaces to eventually replace our G+C., now defunct (though you can find links to blogged archives in the sidebar).

This obviously needs our team to reach consensus by mid-Nov on what sites our moderators are willing to monitor.

Mission 2 - fill in the Google registration form

Complete the 2-step registration process by filling in the Google form, https://forms.gle/zE1D5JPBHtuVPaUF7

Why?

This registers you in our session and allows us to whitelist you on our Minecraft server

What should you be doing?

Assemble the following information

  1. Your real name and where you’re from
  2. Please provide a link to one of your web or social media profiles, or to your introduction to our community  in one of our networks; e.g. Groups.io from step 1
  3. Your Minecraft player name (known or intended)
You'll need to obtain a valid Minecraft user name  in order for us to whitelist you on our MC server
  4. Your level of experience with Minecraft (ranging from “noob” to expert)
  5. A link to where you will track your learning journey (e.g. a wiki, blog, or ePortfolio)
  6. Your Twitter handle (if you have one)
  7. Your Discord ID (see Mission 3)

How can you do this?
Fill in the formhttps://forms.gle/zE1D5JPBHtuVPaUF7

How can you verify this mission accomplished?

A field with your data will appear in the dBase linked to the Google form, so we'll know when you've registered

When you have registered and obtained a Microsoft user ID from Mojang, we can whitelist you on our server

Mission 3 - Install Discord and Join our game chat space (EVO Minecraft)

Why?

We use this app to communicate in voice during our in-world Minecraft sessions.

How can you do this?

  • If you have a discord account and know how to use it, join EVO Minecraft in DIscord
by clicking on this invitation link https://discord.gg/9QAvHcV .
  • If clicking the link doesn't work for any reason please copy the link and use it to join the server.

If you don't have Discord, have never used it before or need help remembering how to join our server, do the following:

How can you verify your mission accomplished?

By speaking to us through Discord when you join us in-world in Minecraft

Mission 4 - Join our Missions Accomplished Google sheet

Join our Weeks 1-2 “Missions Accomplished” Google Sheet, https://tinyurl.com/evomc19-badgetrack  <<2020 Do we need a evomc20 - badgetrack>>

I'm willing to forego this (Vance). We have had reduced to negligible interest in badges since the interest shown in 2015 and 2016. Olivetree has expressed interest (and the need) for having some kind of certificate. If someone can take this on, you can revise Mission 4. Otherwise we could delete it.

Why?

This gets you into the system whereby we can award your badges based on information you supply here.

For example, you can fill in information here leading to the awarding of the Minecraft Survivor's Badge.

This sheet acts as the “evidence” for your accomplishments in the course toward attaining goals set forth for the awarding of the badge.

When you receive your badge, the evidence makes possible that ...

  • Anyone can see and verify how they have completed the set criteria

  • Anyone clicking on a Credly awarded badge can be hyperlinked to this document giving evidence for what you did that led to the awarding of the badge, thus giving the badge its credibility.

What should you be doing?

You need to join the sheet so that you can enter your missions accomplished at https://tinyurl.com/evomc19-badgetrack  <<2020 Do we need a evomc20 - badgetrack>>

but you won't be accepted to write to this form until you have registered on our Google form in Mission 2

How can you do this?

Simply visit the sheet and request to join it

https://tinyurl.com/evomc19-badgetrack  <<2020 Do we need a evomc20 - badgetrack>>

How can you verify this mission accomplished?

We'll see your entry in the list of writers on the Google sheet

Mission 4 should be deleted or revised - it ends here

Mission 5 - Join us in Minecraft

Once we have you registered we can white list you on our server.

Why?

This is the practice part of a student's practicing and reflecting

What should you be doing?

  1. Purchase your login to Minecraft from Mojang http://minecraft.net
    All software downloads including server software and client software multiple devices are free;
you pay around $30 for your unique login credential (to Mojang, not to us, we can only use emeralds and diamonds which we get by trading with villagers in Minecraft)
  2. Check out some tutorials (start at https://minecraft.net/game/howtoplay)
  3. Rose has created an infographic with tips for evomc19, eternally valid for 2020 and beyond!

  4.  View one of our other videos, or one or more of your own choosing

Videos for beginners to help you work out what to do

    1. Co-moderator Jeff Kuhn’s Minecraft Basics:

    2. Co-moderator Filip Smolčec’s How to Survive the First Night:

    3. Vance's stab at recording a screencast of a first day survival in Minecraft

    4. Dakota Redstone reveals some of his techniques in this charming video about how to stay alive your first night in Minecraft and thrive the next day

How can you do this?

  1. See how to join us in Minecraft <-- here
  2. See 2020 Server information <-- here

How can you verify this mission accomplished?

You can capture screen shots, post them on Twitter or Facebook, tag them #evomc20 ... so many ways :-)

Your activity on the server is logged and can be verified.

You can cite the link of any live online session in which you participated that is recorded here 2020_Live_Events

This page will populate as the session progresses.

Missions for Week 2 Declare

Jan, 19-25, 2020

Week 1 orientation missions will all likely carry on into Week 2 - Declare

Mission 6 - Attend live events scheduled for Weeks 1 - 2

How to create a Doodle poll to propose times for live meetings

If you create a Doodle poll, be sure and click in Time Zone help so others will see your poll in their time zone. Here are the steps.

  1. Start at https://doodle.com/
  2. You can create an account if you wish. If you do this you will have a better tool set for tracking your poll and receiving notices when someone has altered it. But logon is optional when creating or participating in Doodle polls. Anyone can do it.
  3. Create a poll that people will be able to see easily by limiting the day/time range and number of options they can vote on (you'll see once you've done it)
  4. Be sure to "use time zone for this poll" - This is what the poll looks like at the bottom of the page before you send it:
    https://www.screencast.com/t/TsIWUdoURTQ

  5. Once you "use time zone for this poll" people will be able to see the poll in THEIR time zone, and then at the bottom of your page, you see
    https://www.screencast.com/t/DIQmpknzXE

  6. Once you've created your poll, you'll get a link to it. Share the link on your social network.

We need to verify that these steps are still valid for 2020; might need revised screenshots

Stick with us - this could be you

Mission 7 - Reflect on your activities for Weeks 1-2

  • Do some background reading (see below)
  • Attend our live sessions
  • Join us in the game

Why?

On the theory that a student practices and reflects, whereas a teacher practices and demonstrates, we ask you to surpass your role as 'teacher' and do all four!; see slide 22 from

Downes, S. (2007). Personal Learning the Web 2.0 Way. Stephen Downes: Knowledge, Learning, Community. Available: https://www.downes.ca/presentation/144
